Southern Amateur League

Match Reports 2008-2009

Seventh XI

Old Parkonians 1 Winchmore Hill 2
Southern Amateur League
Minor Section Division Three
Saturday 27 September

The 7’s travelled away to Old Parkonians, which over the years has always been a tough fixture.

Jason Townsend must have felt right at home as we drove up the high road, past Faces night club through Ilford. The glare from fake gems hanging from birds navels was incredible, we even saw a girl bowling up the road in a bikini top with the customary Burberry vitton shoulder bag with a mongrel’s head popping out of it sporting home made ear piercing. Jason then decided to hang out the window singing Fernando Torres Liverpool’s no. 9 songs for giving his daily Star dream team a boost.

It was certainly a perfect day for football, a balmy 20 degrees, no wind, a lovely flat green surface to play football on and all the Arsenal boys expectant, at home a to Hull – a gimme if there was ever one, surely

Everyone was really up for this one, - eight minutes before kick off Mick Orme had to go back to the changing room and drag half the side out onto the pitch, Paul Cooper had the kit and was delayed because his meals on wheels had been late.

The first half saw both sides playing flowing football with half chances at both ends from some long-range efforts. Jamie Bell had a fine effort tipped over the bar from a free kick just outside the box mid way through the half.

We went into the break the better team but the score line did not reflect this at 0-0 with our heads up we still had some hard work to do to break the opposition down, the team talk was basically keep doing what we did in the first half and our quality will prevail.

The first attack of the half saw the hill go 1-0 up with a well worked goal, Jamie Bell won the ball in midfield looked up and passed to Jason Linton who slid the perfect through ball into the path of Mick Orme who used his weight to hold off the Six foot two beast that was man marking him to choose his spot in the bottom corner from the on rushing keeper. Michael Owen would have been proud of that one.

With our tails up we played with lots of confidence and spirit as we pushed on for more goals with some nice crosses into the box from the flanks, midway through the half Mick Orme was surprised to have the ball at his feet outside the box and on side! With no defenders anywhere and the keeper off his line Mick calmly lobbed the keeper to make it 2-0.

Old Parks pushed on, now with a five-man midfield. The Hill captain made a decision, which later he would regret in subbing a forward and adding extra in midfield. Old Parks picked up on this instantly and pushed another up front. Now they were playing a 2,5,3. Soon Parks had pulled one back through a scrappy goal. Our stand in keeper Chris Bond could not hold onto a fierce drive, which was finally bundled over the line as Chris bravely tried to retrieve the ball and got a whack to the head for his efforts leaving him spark out on the floor.

The Hill were on the back foot until about the last ten minutes until we found ourselves again and tried to put the game to bed with some nice attacking football, eventually and to our relief the ref finally blew up for full time giving us our first win of the season.

Well done to all that played, more of the same next week please.
