Match Summary: After a decent pre-season which included a trip to the ECB Academy in Loughborough, wins over Wanstead and Radlett as well as a poor display at a well-drilled Welwyn Garden City the new look First XI opened their league campaign with high hopes. New skipper Neil Hurst had been in the runs with scores of 75 and 97 in the two wins, new signing Jim Gatting was scoring runs and taking wickets and two of the spin triplets (Barker and Amedee) had also been among the wickets. Hampstead arrived at the Paulin as we'd expected, all struts and pouts but with obvious talent throughout the side including one Shaun Levy, he of Winchmore Hill cloth for a decade or more of nurturing. Things started well with the ground looking resplendent on a hot early summers day on a belter of a pitch. Hill batted first with Hurst and Oli Adamson starting well taking the score to 65 without loss at good pace. Adamson in particular was in fine fettle after a slow start in pre-season and marked his return to form with three crisply struck boundaries in the opening over. However with both openers back in the hutch either side of drinks (Adamson for an excellent 52) Hill pressed the self-destruct button ably assisted along the way by some intriguing umpiring decisions. Six down at lunch for less than 100 was stretched to 163 by some lusty hitting from Dan Amedee and Adam Howarth but in truth it was well below par for the wicket. Levy even took an unbelievable tumbling catch to his left to dismiss Amedee but this must have been assisted by the hefty brown envelope protruding from his left trouser pocket. Still with the spin triplets in the side all was not lost and Hill took to the field with renewed verve despite the lack of pace bowling options currently available. However, such optimism was soon to be beaten out of the hosts as Hampstead set about the Hill attack from ball one with their overseas player playing superbly for an unbeaten hundred. He scored his runs all around the wicket and didn’t give a chance. Fair play to him. The team will draw a line under this performance. Take nothing away from Hampstead, they batted, bowled and caught extremely well, but Hill know they are much better than this display suggests. More players are due to return creating competition for places and expect a reaction immediately starting this week with a league game at Stanmore and a National Cup game at home to Gerrards Cross.
