Winchmore Hill 3 Nottsborough 0
Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup Final
at Norsemen F.C.
Saturday 10 April

On a very warm Saturday afternoon the Hill ones arrived at Norseman FC to face title rivals Nottsborough in the biggest amateur football cup final in
London. The crowd of over 200 people added to that cup final experience. It was also nice to see some friendly faces in the crowd, special hellos for Hursty and Ben Willis.  Its fair to say the Winchmore Hill support outnumbered the Nottsborough fans, a big thank you to you all from the squad.

Dressed in suits and club ties the Hill boys looked smart, focused and ready for action. The Notts lads in their shorts and t-shirts looked relaxed but their attire did little to impress the AFA personnel!

The line up for the Hill was pretty close to full strength minus Hackworthy (still injured) and Davison (still skiing). Carts in goal, Mattie, Gylo, Branners and Putt made up the defence. Midfield three of Broad, Beya and Brennan out wide Surya and Aby with the goal machine Andy Barrel the lone striker.

The pitch from a distance looked in good condition but up close it was very hard and pretty bare in places. Add to this three brand new footballs pumped up to their maximum pressure it makes passing, controlling or dribbling pretty difficult.

The Hill started well and immediately starting winning the 50-50s, headers and looked the brighter of the two sides.

It took only 20 minutes for the Hill to open the scoring. A ball in from the left was struck by Barrell, saved by Ashley, bounced back to Barrell and this boy does not miss twice, 1-0

The rest of the first half passed with plenty of huff and puff from both sides but little goalmouth action. Of note was the solid defending by the entire Hill back line and in particular Martin Brannigan who was outstanding all game.

A half time talk from the Gaffer was relaxed and an air of confidence could be felt in the changing room.

Then the moment that sealed the game came (somebody on the sideline said it was a Paul Robinson moment!), a back pass to Ashley hit a bobble and rolled into the back of the Notts net. 2-0, it was one of those occasions where celebrating feels harsh but in the heat of the moment the Hill knew this could be the moment that brought the cup home.

Hill continued to move the ball quicker and looked the more likely to score. Notts who continued to play long balls onto Branners’s head did not really look like breaking through.

Then the moment the fans were waiting for, a slip by the Notts defender gave Barrell half a chance, using his pace he cut inside, beat his man and curled a shot into the top corner, unstoppable, 3-0.

Notts pushed on for the last 10 mins and Carts made one save (his only one of the game) from a corner. The Hill kept their concentration well and took pride in keeping a clean sheet (the fear of upsetting Carts much in everyone’s mind!)

The final whistle was met with celebrations from the Hill although we were all a little surprised to win by 3-0 (we prefer 1-0s really)

It now appears that we have won the AFA a record number of times (5) and all players should feel immense pride and satisfaction in the achievement.

Our regular senior fans/all ex players enjoyed getting their hands back on the AFA cup and were happy to show off their success from 1952 which is inscribed onto the trophy. A draw with a Royal Navy XI (HMS Daedelus) which the inscription shows the cup being shared after a 0-0 draw, when asked why this was, the old men were happy to admit that penalty shoot outs had not been invented!

(HMS Daedulus was originally a Naval Air Station in Lee-on-Solent. At the time of the Final it was in the hands of the Fleet Air Arm. In these far distant days no football was permitted in England after the FA Cup Final had been played and there was no possibility of a replay. HMS Deadulus also reached the final in 1958, losing to Barclays Bank 2 – 1).

With four league games left the league is still wide open, if we continue to play like this then we have a great chance of doing the double, watch this space!

LACKLUSTRE HILL MAINTAIN ADVANTAGE
It is often said that the mark of a good team is that they win, even when playing badly.  This was the outcome that Winchmore Hill achieved on a day that saw a struggling Old Wilsonians visit the Paulin ground.

The Hill were high on confidence having reached the AFA Cup Final and beaten their SAL bogey side, West Wickham, in successive weeks.  However this relative success appeared to create an air of complacency as a sluggish and lethargic Winchmore team started slowly and continued to perform poorly.

The return from injury of key players Putt, Chin and Brannigan gave the home team more options but it was the visitors who started brighter. A well struck free kick forced an excellent save from Carter, who nearly embedded his face in the new woodwork and numerous corners and long throws were putting the Hill backline under pressure.  Coupled with the lazy attitude that appeared to be running through the home side, the wise money would have been on the visitors taking the lead.

Luckily enough, Wilsonians, who aren’t the fit, energetic side that we remember from a couple of seasons ago, but still offer some class through midfield, began to run out of steam.  Hackworthy departed, some say psychologically scarred from his legs getting stuck in treacle; he himself claiming that he pulled a quad, but either way he was struggling to move.  The reshuffle saw Brannigan move to centre half and Ben Head drop into the midfield.

Eventually, a tidy move through the middle of the park released Barrell – was he offside? We’ll never know, he says not, the away side said yes, but ultimately, in the rich vein of form he is in, the rest was a formality.  He neatly rounded the keeper and finished off the post. This was Barrell’s 22nd of the season, in just 20 matches, his 10th consecutive goal-scoring match, you have to go back to early November to find the last time he played and didn’t score. Indeed, just one other player, Ben Head, has scored for the Hill in 2010.  Enough of the plaudits, but just imagine how good he could be if he was fit?!?!?! Don’t get injured skiing!

The rest of the half was a scrappy affair, offering little for the spectators to cheer. A good effort from Beya and a half chance for Wilsonians the only forays into either box.

Some strong words at half time failed to spark Winchmore to life and they continued to go through the motions, much to the frustration of skipper and manager alike. Fortunately, Winchmore remained resolute defensively and the opposition huffed and puffed but failed to really hurt the home side. To be honest, I can’t remember any chances of note worth commenting on; a couple of well put together passing moves resulted with no end product to do them justice.

In the end, this was a hugely important three points that keep Winchmore top of the table with six games to go. The individual abilities of the squad are not in doubt, however, a big change in attitude and effort are imperative for the challenges to come; trophies are not handed to you on a plate and we will have to fight every step of the way; the old cliché, 7 cup finals, if you like and starting next week at Wickham, where Winchmore will be looking for their first win in four years.

Winchmore Hill 2 West Wickham 1
Southern Amateur League
Senior Section Division One
Saturday 13 March

Following last week’s triumph in the AFA cup Semi-Final the Hill were due to entertain West Wickham at the Paulin Ground. The pitch was in good condition and the new goals were assembled in time for the 3 o’clock kick off. Much had been said about Winchmores’ form against West Wickham in recent seasons, and the opposition fancied their chances against what was a depleted WInchmore team – in total six players were missing from the Hill squad including three players which had started in the previous win over Old Owens. This meant a recall to the squad for Paul Strouts. West Wickham are the current form team in the SAL and tight encounter was anticipated.

When the game kicked off it was not long before the first goal was scored. A long throw was taken and following some head tennis in the Hill box, the ball somehow come off the crossbar and deflected into the net by the heel of the despairing Carter. With a young side Winchmore did well to regain composure and began to assert themselves on the game. Few clear cut chances were created in the first half and the Hill did well to go into the changing rooms at half-time level due to a goal by Andy Barrell. Following a horrendous foul on Stroutsie by the Wickham skipper, the free-kick was driven into the box. An excellent headed effort from Ben Head was saved well only to be volleyed into the net by Barrell the second time round.

During the half-time team talk there was much talk about territorial advantage and applying pressure in the West Wickham half. Indeed the pressure caused problems for West Wickham and there was a noticeable swing of momentum in Winchmores favour. Hill were patient and the breakthrough finally came courtesy of an Andy Barrell header. Rod Beya delivered and excellent corner putting the ball on plate for the unmarked Barrell on the six yard box to head home. The Hill battled hard for the remainder of the game and took a number of fouls from the frustrated Wickham players, the most memorable being a dead leg for Matty Knights which left him hobbling and ‘attention seeking’ for the remainder of the game.

Winchmore held on for the win and a predicted close encounter delivered just that. At the business end of the season points are important. The Hill showed excellent strength and depth in their squad, and worked hard for a well deserved three points. Onwards to next week where Winchmore will entertain Old Wilsonians where your support will be much appreciated.

Winchmore Hill 1 Old Owens 0
Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup - Semi Final
Saturday 6 March

Playing Old Owens is pretty much a derby game in this strange world of amateur London football! Knowing a few faces and a bit of friendly rivalry in the writer’s opinion gives that extra edge to the game.

So down to Old Parkonians for this AFA semi final went the Ones, in the hope of reaching a final which at this stage was due to be held at the Paulin Ground.

After two below par performances against Actonians and Nottsborough, the players knew it was time to get the season back on track.

A calmer approach from the gaffer rubbed off on the team and the pre match banter flowed, Branners on the receiving end as usual, (where did he get that shirt and how weak are his ankles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Changes to the line up included Hugo De Jesus in for Surya Templay, Aby Seymour back on the left wing, Stuart Broad replacing Davo (Chris Davison) in the holding role and Andy Barrell back up top.

The Hill started well, it is clear when we move the ball quickly and don’t dwell on it we are a much better side. Owens were struggling to deal with the threat from Aby and Hugo and Rod Beya was finding his passing range. Once again a little more accuracy and calmness in the final third would have led to the creation of far more chances.

The first incident of note in the first half involved Hugo receiving the ball, skinning the full back and being upended by the centre half, Penalty!

Up stepped Mr. reliable Andy Barrell, the boy with all the football ability in the world scuffed his shot into the keeper’s arms. Not that I want to be to harsh but it was a poor pen! Barrell has assured his team mates next time he will actually strike the ball!!!

With the history of disappointments surrounding penalties and the first team it would have been easy to drop our heads but this year’s team appear to be made of sterner stuff and we continued the first half pressing forward and still looking the most likely to score.

The second half saw the Hill playing into the wind but continuing to pass and move and keep the pressure on Owens. Broad and Brannigan were dominating the midfield battle. Rod Beya having his best game in weeks (my Man of the Match) was constantly turning his marker and playing the right passes at the right time, when he plays like this the attacking side of the team is at its best.

The defending was solid with Owens getting in once in the second half, Dan Putt did enough to distract the striker who blasted over.

The next chance again fell to Barrell who side stepped the keeper and centre half (looked like he slipped to me) and was left with an open goal. Not that I want this report to become a witch hunt against Barrell (he has scored 80% of all our goals!) anyhow Barrell with the gaping goal in his sites shinned the ball out for a throw in!!!

The next chance again fell to the Hill after good work from Aby the ball went across the Owens goal line and Beya just failed to put it away.

The final chance of normal time fell to Hackworthy who flicked on Barrell’s free kick onto the post and wide!

EXTRA TIME
The team approached extra time much like the entire game, confident and looking to score the vital one goal that could decide things. Spirits were high and we knew we had been the better side but now had to become the winning team.

At last the goal came, Aby again flying down the left wing crossed and that man Barrell ensured redemption was found when he slotted a free header into the bottom left corner, 1-0

The Hill never really looked like conceding though Owens did mange to hit the bar from a free kick, Carts had it covered anyhow!!

Final whistle, massive relief but in the end we got exactly what we deserved, A place in the final.

News followed this week that the final will now be played at Norseman (as if home advantage makes any difference) and the entire squad is looking forward to the game.

Thanks to the support we received on Saturday and we hope to see you again on April 10th.

Winchmore Hill 1 Old Actonians Assoc. 1
Southern Amateur League - Senior Section Division One
Saturday 20 February

Good game against tough opponents ended in a draw on Saturday at the Paulin Ground. Buoyed by recent results and performances the Hill were looking forward to welcoming Actonians on Saturday confident that they could repeat the outcome of the highly eventful game earlier in the season.

However, Actonians obviously had different ideas and from the start of the game were in the ascendency pinning the Hill back through a combination of good football, particularly making good use of the diagonal ball to both flanks, and tenacious tackling and defending.  For the entire 45 minutes Hill couldn’t get to grips with the game. The only plus point being that after a poor half we were only one down at the break.

The solitary goal came after only 3 minutes.  The Actonians forward having dispossessed a Hill player in the final third ran unencumbered towards goal before slotting the ball past the exposed Carter.  This further encouraged the opposition and further unsettled an already out of sorts Hill.  The rest of the half followed a similar vein with Hill either losing or giving up possession far too easily and Actonians continually causing problems for the defence.  Fortunately for the Hill they were unable to turn their advantage into more goals.

After a few choice words at half-time the Hill emerged a more galvanised unit and began to gain greater share of possession and territory.  The opposition were still proving to be dangerous but these moments tended to be more sporadic than in the first half.  That said despite their territorial advantage the Hill were finding it hard to carve out any clear cut chances.

In the last ten minutes the opposition hit the post and had a shot saved by Carter in quick succession which seemed to give the Hill that extra bit of encouragement to get the equaliser.  When it arrived it was more Stoke than Barcelona.  A long through from the man with the shortest arms on the pitch was headed on by the man with the longest neck on the pitch and finished by the man with serenest disposition on the pitch.   That’s Matty, Branners and Barrell for those of you less familiar.

One all with a couple of minutes could the Hill get the winner.  Unfortunately not and in truth Actonians nearly nicked it when their centre forward was a Fellaini’s haircut away from converting a good free kick played into the ‘corridor of uncertainty’.  It ended one all.

A good competitive game well refereed.  Onwards and upwards.

Winchmore Hill 1 Civil Service 0
Southern Amateur League - Senior Section Division One
Saturday 13 February

Winchmore returned to league action against a determined Civil Service team who needed points to avoid the drop and the Hill playing their first league game for over two months needing the points to maintain top spot.

The Hill had there usual pre match fight for socks and shorts with Davo’s shorts looking a bit tighter than usual probably due to the weight he has gained in the last few weeks. Also the players finally found out who the sock thief was with most of the team accusing Knights the gaffer came in to the changing room modelling his latest pair of black socks leaving the Hack to wear a blue pair.

The Hill made one change from last weeks win with Broad out after refusing to play in the same team as Hackworthy after recent reports that the Hack had been playing away with Gylo’s girlfriend it came to light that it was in fact Broady’s. The man with the best name (and hair) in the club Dejesus came in to replace Broad.

The game kicked off and was a scrappy encounter for the first fifteen minutes with too many passes going astray and Hill struggling to get into a rhythm.  This changed when new SAL playmaker Brannigan threaded a through ball to Surya who hit the post. This got the Hill going and should have been ahead at half time with Knights and Barrell missing good chances. Before half time Civil nearly took the lead but lobbed just wide when through on goal.

Hill having a few things to sort out at half time came out and in a determined fashion and had a few chances without really testing Civil’s keeper. The Hill’s goal finally arrived from a free kick after a foul on Davo.  25 yards out centre of the goal up stepped free kick specialist Barrell to curl the ball up and over the wall and into the top corner for his 17
th of the season.

After the goal the game opened up with Winchmore Hill looking dangerous but without really finding the killer ball to get the second goal. Davo made a great run late on and let fly from twenty yards but the ball ended up where it normally ends up when Davo shoots; high and handsome over the pavilion.  As per usual the shout of ‘I caught it well though’ was heard from Davo as he trundled back to the centre of the pitch.
The game was petering out when deep into injury time events took an interesting turn.  A long punt upfield let the Civil’s striker in on goal only to be sandwiched by Putty and Hackworthy and a penalty was awarded. In truth none of them was actually going to catch the ball as they appeared to wearing clown shoes and running in treacle.  Hill feared the worst with Carter not having the best record at saving penalties. We were proved right when Civil’s player stepped up to send Carter the wrong way and plant his penalty into the top corner off the bar.  However, the kick had to be retaken due to 3 or 4 Civil players encroaching into the box before the kick was taken.  One of them was actually in front of the penalty taker! Carter then engaged in a bit of mind games with Civil’s penalty taker and it worked with Carter diving full stretch to make a great save and push it behind for a corner which was duly cleared and the final whistle blew to give the Hill the points

After the game Branners wasn’t happy after Carter told him his touch was getting worse if it could get any worse and Gylo was looking forward to his Valentine’s Day evening with Rod’s cousin. Actonians next week will be another tough game with the hill needing to improve to keep top spot
.

Winchmore Hill 2 Honourable Artillery Company 1
Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup
Quarter Final
Saturday 6 February

After the long and successful trip to Birmingham last weekend it was back to the Paulin for the quarter final of the AFA cup for the ones.

Keeping the same line up as last week there was an air of confidence amongst the side. This was however soon questioned after a lack of energy in the warm up led to the first raised voices of the day.

The gaffer showing true commitment to the cause had watched the opposition in the last round of the cup. To his disappointment (and ours) he soon realised they had changed half their side and the ‘dodgy keeper’ was also absent!!

HAC are a well organized and determined outfit much like the British army themselves, however I was assured after the game the team are all ex Warwick University students with no desires to set off for Afghanistan!

It was soon apparent that we were in for a tough afternoon. HAC like to keep the ball and tried to pick holes in our defence, luckily our well organized shape dealt with much they could offer and no great chances fell to either side in the first 20 minutes.

The Hill, also trying to play the right way were struggling to get a stranglehold on the game until a corner led to the opening goal. The ball was swung into the box from the right hand side by Davo and after ricocheting off a variety of bodies hit the bar, bounced onto the back of their centre halves swede and dropped over the line, 1-0.

Much debate has occurred relating to claims to the goal with Branners (the new SAL select number 10) claiming a touch, Davo with the delivery having a shout but to settle this now and to be updated by the web master it was an OWN GOAL! Even Mattie Knights agrees!!!

The first half passed without any exciting action to note.

The Hill began the second half in a sluggish fashion and some players need to look at their personal fitness levels. Both sides again tried and failed to create any good chances.

The final pass that we so often discuss was not quite happening for the Hill when it appeared we had good possession, in a great position and with plenty of players pushing forward.

Finally the ball we were looking for was played through to Beya who calmly crossed to an unmarked Barrel to pass home, 2-0.

Soon after, not content with keeping a clean sheet the Hill failed to deal with a corner and a free header from the winger was planted into Carters top corner 2-1. To be fair we had dealt with the corners pretty well all afternoon but the lack of concentration for this one can not be repeated.

The final whistle came and to everyone’s relief we were through to the semi finals.

Old Owens await with the team knowing that improvement in all areas is needed if we are going to get what we want out of the rest of the season.

Old Danes 3 Winchmore Hill 2
AFA Middlesex & Essex Senior Cup – Round Three
Saturday 12 December

Disappointing is the word that springs to mind after being knocked out of the Middlesex cup by lower league opposition.

On a park pitch which really was a leveler Hill started off in a positive fashion. Trying to play football on an impossible surface was the downfall to most of our attacking play.  Old Danes were competitive and aware that the game could go either way and were happy to launch the ball into dryer areas of the pitch.

Danes opens the scoring from a long throw in that wasn’t dealt with, leading to the opposing striker connecting with a decent overhead kick in to the top right corner of Cart’s net, unstoppable.

The Hill responded, and from a free kick Matt knights headed the equalizer, shortly after another free kick was struck sweetly into the top corner by Barrel and we went into half time not playing great but winning 2-1.

The second half is one only to be remembered in the case for not allowing it to happen again. The writers personal opinion is that for the first time this season the side lost its shape and were duly punished for switching off and not reacting quickly enough to situations of danger.

A long kick left Hackworthy and Gyles out of position and from what may have been an off side position the striker placed home a good finish, he should never have had the time or space to even get a shot on target! 2-2

Almost immediately after, Danes scored from a corner which the Hill literally watched come into the box and nobody reacted apart from the Danes sub 3-2

The players know that, missed chances, no linesman and a terrible pitch are still no excuse for a performance like this.

The old saying you are only as good as your last game should be on the minds of all players who should seek to correct this on Saturday.

Winchmore Hill 3 Alexandra Park 0
AFA Senior Cup – Round Three
Saturday 5 December

The Hill took on Alexandra Park in a local derby in the 3rd round of the AFA Senior Cup.  The pitch and conditions were ideal for a game of football, and the pitch should have suited the Hills slick passing game, however, this was the not the case.  But this said the Hill did enough to dominate and win the game 3-0.  Although this should have been about 10-0.

With Carts out injured from last week, Griff stepped in between the posts and managed a clean sheet which Carts has only managed twice in 10 games!

Other than that the team remained largely unchanged with only Broad stepping back into the midfield after his holiday (business trip) in the Caribbean.

The Hill started brightly and were soon on top, but the first goal came from a quick breakaway following an Alexandra Park corner, Davo was sent through one on one with the keeper but before he had a chance to show us how far over the bar he could get it he was brought down outside the box by the last defender.  Who strangely was only booked!  Aby stepped up and dispatched the free kick into the top corner with such power that the keeper did not even move.

Soon after, the Hill lost Gylo to injury, when after being told that his amazing piece of skill from last week was missed by many fans, decided to try it again from the goal line, this time he did not even beat one man and smacked one knee against the other and had to limp off.

1-0 soon became 2-0 when the ball broke to Davo 25 yards out who arrowed the ball into the bottom corner.  The Hill were well and truly on top now but the Alexandra Park keeper was having a fine game and made some good saves to keep it at 2-0 before he was let down by his defence when a cheap penalty was given away.  Ball thrown into Davo, with no where to go the defender just went through the back of him to give away the penalty. Up stepped Andy Barrell to put away his 13th goal of the season.

3-0 at halftime with Hill well on top.

The 2nd half was much the same as the first with the Hill dominating again, but they could not add to the 3 goals with a master class on how not to score when in the 18 yard box, as well as some good defending and great saves from the Alexandra Park back four and keeper. 70 mins in Davo was also lost to injury although we are still not sure if it was his foot he injured or was just too embarrassed to carry on after screaming like a girl when tackled!  This meant Rod Beya was given a ran out after returning from injury and nearly scored an amazing goal when he went past 3 to 4 defenders before a last ditch tackle stopped him from scoring.

The game finished 3-0, not a great performance, but a clean sheet and into the next round of the cup.

After the game the Hill enjoyed a Christmas night out in Cambridge, which Dan Putt will be providing a report on!!

Old Owens 3 Winchmore Hill 4
Southern Amateur League
Senior Section Division One
Saturday 28 November

Since my time at the Hill the games against Owens have always been eventful and this was one was no exception.  7 goals, 8 stitches, 52 second half minutes, several bookings and 3 officials.  This game had it all!

Owens started brightly and forced several corners and dangerous free kicks in the first 5 minutes with Hill taking a while to settle.  Once they did their ability to shift the ball and get in behind the oppo was immediately apparent.  After 15 minutes the Hill took the lead when the returning ‘hairy handed’ Gylo intercepted a ball which was then collected by the ever industrious and committed Mattie Knights who quickly advanced and slid a great ball through for the unflappable Barrell to finish with aplomb, 1-0.  The goal clearly rocked the oppo who took a while to recover.  They slowly edged back into the game and duly equalised from a free-kick.  Ben Head was penalised for ‘weightsing’ an oppo off the ball.  The resultant free kick was reasonably struck but it was the sun that did for Carter who lost it at the last minute and whilst making the save didn’t do enough with the ball allowing one of their players to slide in and score, 1-1.  Within 3 minutes Hill were back in front.  Abi who was causing havoc from the left side took a perfect pass from the impressive Head and from the tightest of angles swept the ball in for 2-1.  in the closing 5 minutes of the half a bad touch by the clean through oppo centre forward set up a lovely 50-50 between him and Carter which resulted in Carter getting the ball and a lovely split shin which later required 8 stitches.  2-1 at half time to the Hill.

Within 10 minutes of the second half starting the game was over as a contest.  A corner was dispatched via the go-go-gadget neck of Branners, aka Bobby Moore, for 3-1 and then a couple of minutes later Barrell having a majestic game sprinted, yes sprinted, onto a through ball, nicked it off the keeper and from wide out near the left hand touchline clipped the ball with his left peg one bounce into the net.  A great finish, 4-1 game over, well not quite.  Hill slackened off and in fairness to the oppo they kept going throwing caution to the wind.  Whilst Hill could have made it 5 and 6, it was the oppo that scored twice more.  Their second a header from a great cross and their third from a poorly defended corner.  4-3 with 10 minutes to go.  Still time for plenty more action.  Carter stupidly got involved with one of their players.  A few words were exchanged between the two players which resulted in Carter being sent off (he’d already been booked for disputing an earlier decision).  Harsh decision but he shouldn’t have given the ref (actually the lino) the chance to get involved.  Barrell took over in goal and aside from a decent punch wasn’t really tested in the added-time period.  Strong performers for Hill - Putty, Abi, Davo and Barrell.

4-3 looks close and at the end it was but in reality when it was a proper game with the two teams playing their respective games the Hill were the better team which was reflected in the scoreline.

Winchmore Hill 3 Old Chigwellians 1
(after extra time – score at 90 minutes 1 – 1)
AFA Middlesex & Essex Senior Cup
Saturday 14 November

Following thunder storms and heavy overnight rain the Hill arrived at the Paulin expecting the worst but to be fair the pitch was perfect, firm underneath and wet on top allowing for the ball to be passed around sharply, however this would be to discount the gale force winds that were blowing straight down the ground making it very difficult to control the ball. So it is great credit to both sides that they looked to play passing football to create chances.

The Hill started much the better side and for the first 20 minutes looked like they would dominate the game despite kicking in to wind, with the back four looking to get the ball off Carter at every opportunity and pass our way through midfield to create opportunities to put Seymour and Templar in behind the defence, this tactic worked perfectly but on the times they got to the by line and put good balls across the box no one was there to apply to the finish, and when we did get shots at goal they didn’t threaten the Chigwellian’s keeper, Davison dragging one effort horribly wide of goal after good build up play by Knights and Seymour down the left.

Set pieces were proving to be very valuable and early on the Hill put in some dangerous crosses with the returning Brannigan having a couple of headers, the first he made very little contact and the second he put over the bar.

Having stood off us and let us play the visitors, then started to come into the game as we took a turn standing off them and allowing them to play with their 3 midfielders getting the sort of space we were in the first part of the game, and using the ball quite well switching the play from side to side, although our back four stood strong and Carter didn’t really have too much to trouble him. It was therefore a blow to the Hill when one of the few corners we conceded all game led to the opening goal (with the wind showing it was definitely to play its part), a decent ball was played in from the right, and swung viciously in towards the goal, Carter couldn’t quite reach it and their centre half was happy to accept a free header from 6 yards and nod the ball into the net for 0-1 to Chigwellian’s.

So once again we found ourselves 1-0 down at the break, although we hadn’t played nearly as badly as the previous week, so there were no panic, just calm instructions from the gaffer to close down the space in midfield and feed the wide men’s feet at every opportunity.

Almost immediately from the restart the Hill should have drawn level as Seymour beat two challenges on the left to find himself in front of goal but blazed over with his right foot. A similar chance presented it self to Broad who wriggled past a couple of players in the box, before not getting the required contact on his shot. After a good passing move down the left Seymour flicked the ball to Davison who with the goal wide open hit the ball with his studs into the ground which the keeper did well to react to and keep the ball out.

The wind had got up by now and Chigwellians were finding it very difficult to get the ball out of their half as we pressed for the equaliser. We were dominating possession and getting the ball wide as much as possible but still couldn’t make the break through as a combination of solid defending and good goal keeping keep us out, as well as terrible finishing. Fresh from his hat-trick last week Barrell somehow missed a header from 4 yards after a great corner from Putt found him unmarked. All our pressure was resulting in a number of set-pieces which in the conditions were nearly impossible to defend, particularly the way Putt was delivering them, so it was even more of a shock when Barrell missed another header from what to me looked like 6 yards but Gylo watching behind the goal confirmed later on it was approximately 1 and a half.

Chigwellian’s fashioned a chance from a mistake in possession where we gave the ball away, and the striker broke towards goal, looking to make it 0-2 but a great challenge from Hackworthy saw off the danger. From yet another free kick just outside the box Seymour picked out Knights who headed the ball agonising wide from 8 yards, a miss he was to rue. As just when you would have been forgiven for thinking it wasn’t to be our day another great delivery from a Putt corner when straight into the net to deservedly bring us back on level terms. As we pushed men forward for the winner which with the number of corners we were forcing you thought would definitely come, we left ourselves open at the back, as our visitors broke quickly from one and found themselves with a 3 on one situation, and luckily the striker tried to go himself and was dispossessed just inside the box, where if he’d squared it, we could have been in real trouble. Still neither side could find the winner despite another scuff from Davison who tried his luck from 40 yards for the second week running only to see the ball trickle harmlessly through to the keeper. Barrell desperate to make amends for his earlier headers found himself one on one with the keeper who had come out, and the attempted lob went straight into his open arms.

So into extra time and Chigwellian’s elected to kick into the wind, so we knew we would need to score at least once with the wind, a good break down the left saw Seymour deliver a wicked ball into the box which just evaded Barrell at the far post. The goal when it came was a good move involving 7 or 8 passes then a pin point cross from Putt on the right saw Ben Head home for his first goal for the 1st XI, and the relief for the players was evident.

In the second extra period our deflated visitors pressed for the equaliser with the wind behind them, but the Hill had gained confidence from the goal and looked to keep the ball and passed it really well creating numerous chances as Chigwellians had now gone to 3 or 4 up front, and both Head and Seymour had two or three one on ones with the keeper who made saves from them all, but with men over at each attack we really out to have been out of sight. The final goal came in the closing minutes, as the ball was played in to Barrell who took one touch and played the ball in behind the defence in to the path of Davison who used all his pace to knock the ball around the on rushing keeper and slot the ball into the empty net for his second of the season, one ahead of Knights. The game was now over and the referee blew his whistle for full time and the Hill progress to the next round.

Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup
Round Two
Saturday 7 November
What can I say a poor game made better only by the result.  That’s to take nothing away from the oppo who were committed throughout and showed more than enough to suggest their league position is a false one.

At home after months on the road the pitch and weather conditions were perfect; all encouraging a great game.  Sadly it wasn’t to be.  With several changes due to injury Hill started sluggishly and struggled throughout to get their game going.  Initial uncertainty gave the oppo plenty of encouragement and for most of the half they were in the ascendancy albeit without really creating a decent chance.

Halftime was spent reminding the Hill of the twin dangers of complacency and apathy and of the significance of the AFA cup to the club.

The second half did see a slight improvement from the Hill and after 10 minutes they took lead when a move started from the back ended, via a great pass from Davo, with Barrell nonchalantly lifting the ball over the advancing goalkeeper for 1-0.  This should have been the end of it but through a mixture of comedy defending and good finishing the oppo’s forward took advantage of a ricochet off Hack’s face to slot home the equaliser.  1-1 at full-time.  Extra time began with the sun beginning to fade.  The first half of extra time passed really incident although Hill enjoyed the majority of possession with several of the oppo suffering from cramp.  With 15 minutes left it was a case of whether the Hill would score and win it.  They did.  A well-struck shot from Abi destined for the net (at the side of the goal!) took a helpful deflection and squeezed into the bottom corner.  Two minutes later Barrell did was he does best and made a one v one look easy for 3-1.  in the final minutes Davo topped off another great performance with a thirty yarder (for once he caught it well and it went straight!!) which the keeper did superbly well to get onto the crossbar only to see Barrell collect the rebound drop his shoulder and walk the ball into the net for 4-1.  A convincing score-line in the end but those there know it was closer.

On the plus side the Hill are still in the cup and several more youngsters were blooded in men’s football and enlightened of the expectations of their team mates.  Onwards and upwards.

Saturday 31 October

When is a football pitch not a football pitch?  When it’s covered in goose shit!  This was the state of play when we arrived at Civil Service on Saturday.  Now I’ve played on some shit pitches in my time but never one covered in the stuff.  Anyway on the game.

As a portent of what was to come for him, a mate of Cooky’s appeared on our train carriage ripped the piss out of him for two stops, then doffed his cap and departed.  Legend!  This was obviously still on his mind during the warm-up when without kicking the ball he succumbed to a back spasm that had him walking like he’d broken his arse and out of the game before we’d even started. Steve, call me Mr Punctual, stepped into the breach and, not withstanding a moment of carelessness in the second half which lead to Carts smashing his shin into the centre forward’s knee and crying like a child (actually like an Abi!!), played very well.

The opposition started brightly and within the first 10 minutes forced several corners and free-kicks in dangerous places.  Indeed it was from one of these that they took the lead.  A free kick from the right was swung in and the one of their clutch of giants looped a header over the air-grasping Carter and into the net.

For the first 25 minutes the oppo were very much in the ascendancy but slowly the Hill came into the game and should have equalised when Beya contrived to miss from three yards obviously with his mind very much still on all matters Gallic.  Just before the half time whistle another cross resulted in another of the oppo’s giants heading against the inside of the post.  1-0 half time.

The second half began following a similar pattern to the first until with 10 minutes gone the oppo scored their second.  A half cleared ball was returned into the middle of the box where the oppo forward stubbed out his cigar, gave a quick wave to the crowd and headed into the corner.  Two down, away from home, 30 minutes left.  That sounds familiar.  For the second week running this predicament kick-started the Hill’s performance and five minutes later it was 2-1.  A 'well struck' free kick by Davo glanced off a very straight bit of Putty’s hair and into the net.  Five minutes later it was 2-2.  A near post corner from Abi caused mayhem amongst the giants and the fat arsed midfielder, aka Barrell, slid in to pinch someone else’s goal or as he preferred ‘to make sure’.  Five minutes later it was 3-2 to the Hill.  The oppo keeper who until this point had had a fine game made the mistake of thinking he was an outfield player and took one too many touches (that’s why we wear gloves).  Beya dully picked his pocket artful dodger style and slid the ball into the net to put Hill in the lead.

In response the oppo not content with the average height in the side being 8’9” brought on the aptly named Wood (must be short for Redwood) to boost the average height to a skyscapingly 12’6”. It was he who ghosted into an offside position, unseen by the ref, and extended his go go gadget legs to score the oppo’s equaliser and so complete the scoring of the afternoon.

Both sides could have won it in the dying minutes but with the geese circling and keen to deposit their next load the referee whistled a halt to proceedings and the honours where shared.  A game full of excitement for the fans and nightmares for those of us concerned with stopping goals.  Onwards and upwards

Saturday 24 October

Winchmore hill travelled to Actonians full of confidence off the back of an away win at champion’s nottsborough the previous week. Unfortunately the hill had some key players missing with Rod on holiday, Gylo with a broken hand and of course Branners who is now only 3 weeks 3 days and 3hours away from playing.

The talk before the match was what did Putty have for dinner the night before after a long spell in the bog and who’s going to play up front, with free scoring Newton not being called up and no recognised strikers in the squad the gaffer with his new found banter said he has no choice but to put Barrell and his big arse up top. This meant that Ben came into midfield and Cookie moved into the back line.

On a slick surface the game started at a slow pace with not much going on and most of the play happening in midfield. This was until just before half time when Actonians won a free kick on the edge of the box and smashed it through a crowded penalty area and into the corner. After the match Carts harshly decided to put it down as a Davo own goal! The hill then came into life for the final bit of the half with Aby having a great chance to draw the hill level, what can only be described as an open goal he beat the keeper and somehow hit the post, this drew an end to the half with the Hill not having got going.

The start of the second half saw the hill fall behind further after a ball over the top found the actonians striker who finished sweetly over a stranded Carter to make it 2-0 and looking like there was no way back for the hill. The hill had other ideas and woke up and had a great chance to pull a goal back when Barrell shot straight at the keeper and went out for a corner. Aby swung the corner in for Broady to flick on and Barrell made amends for the miss by stabbing home at the back post. Hill now starting to cause problems soon equalised when Actons keeper fumbled  puttys cross for Barrell to poke home. The hat-trick and comeback was complete minutes later when the stand in strikers turn of pace beat the offside trap to slot it into the corner to put the hill in front.  Acton came back strongly and should really have equalised with a combination of poor finishing and great saves from Carter denying the home team an equaliser. The hill stood firm to the final whistle to gain all 3 points.

Overall not the best performance but a good end result. Also players stepping in and performing which can only benefit the squad for future games. Next week another away journey at civil service.

Saturday 17 October

Winchmore Hill travelled away to reigning League Champions Nottsborough on the back of a disappointing defeat to Poly. This was a ground where the Hill had struggled to pick up points on previous occasions and where a loss proved pivotal in last seasons’ title race.

A problem free journey to Tolworth saw the players arrive punctually at the ground, however the home team had already arrived, changed, put on their make up and started the warm up over an hour before kick off. Due to the continued absence of Martin Brannigan (only 4 weeks, 3 days, 6 hours and 15 minutes away from his comeback) and Stroutsie returning to International duty the squad was again on the short side. However, the gaffer kept his faith with what has been a consistent back four & Carts, moving Broady (on his best behaviour following last Saturday) into the centre of midfield and Surya on the left.

Previous fixtures have demonstrated the importance of taking chances when they present and it was clear from the start that this fixture would be no different. Although some good football was played in the first half, neither team was able to capitalise. The scores at half time remained 0-0.

The second half was played much in the same fashion with the Hill looking more dangerous in the final third. Surya who put in what was probably his best performance of the season (and hopefully a sign of things to come) continued to attack down the left flank and Davo dominated the centre of midfield. Having missed the opportunities to close games through squandered chances, the gaffer expressed his confidence in the teams’ ability to take chances when it really mattered. 15 minutes into the second half and that chance presented itself. A precise clearance from Davo found Rod one-on-one. Although his shot beat the keeper, it did not beat post and trickled agonisingly wide.

Fortunately, moments later, Rod kept his cool when feeding a through ball to Aby, and this time the Hill player made no mistake with the finish – lifting the ball over the goalkeeper – lesson learned, 1-0! Although Nottsborough tried to respond, the Hill stood firm and won their personal battles across the field limiting Nottsborough to attempts from long range which Carts dealt with comfortably. Their best attempt came in unexpected circumstances when Joe Hackworthy misjudged a back pass which look destined for the net, where it not for some neat footwork from Carts.

Although the Hill could not find that second decisive goal, lightning did strike twice for the Winchmore Hill right back, as for the second time this season he was struck plumb ‘middle wicket’ letting out a high pitch squeal in the process. Cookie replaced Broady with 15 minutes to go and was dominant in the air; with confidence high he even managed a lung-bursting run down the right flank only to shank the ball high and wide of the opposition’s goal. The Hill stood firm, collecting a well deserved three points in the process – no missed penalties, no frayed tempers, and no kicked water bottles this time round!

With doubts over the fitness of Gylo and the absence of Branners, Stroutsie and Rod (on a school trip to Bordeaux) the next fixture will be a difficult one. Rumours have developed in recent days which suggest a change of formation to a more conventional 4-4-2 which will incorporate ‘fox in the box’ Matty Knights playing off of the flicks and tricks of a certain striker!!...stay tuned.

Saturday 10 October

A tight game between the Hill and Poly was settled by a solitary goal scored in the 93 minute by Poly’s best player.

Until the late goal both sides had played well creating and missing several good chances throughout the game.

Despite being buoyed by the return of the old gunslinger Stroutsie, playing in a more advanced role where his touch and technique could be best utilised, it was Poly who started the brighter.  They had a couple of early chances to take the lead but through a mixture of good defending and not so good finishing the scores remained level.  Hill slowly got into their stride and in the space of 10 minutes had two headers from Matty Knights cleared off the line via the bar and a great cross from Aby whistle across the six yard box.

The second half saw Poly again start well and in the opening 10 minutes they had a ‘goal’ chalked off for offside and one of their players managed to smash over from 10 yards despite being in 10 yards of space.  After this let-off the Hill began to gain a degree of dominance and pushed hard for a winner.  Several half chances came and went without conversion until deep into injury time when another corner resulted in a chance at the far stick for the Hack who unfortunately steered it wide.  Within 30 seconds the ball was flicked by the substitute ‘big’ centre forward for his bearded fellow striker to latch onto and guide it home.  1-0, three points, game over!!  A bitter pill to swallow but one which I’m sure will make Hill all the stronger.  Onwards and upwards.

Winchmore Hill 2 Weirside Rangers 0
Southern Amateur League
Senior Section Division One
Saturday 3 October

After a settled week of weather perfect for football, Saturday once again brought a change in the elements! Weirside Rangers arrived to see the tail of the worlds latest Hurricane swirling around the Paulin ground! Conditions that ensured playing any football was going to be difficult for both sides.

Hill made one change to the starting 11. Branners out meant Broad into central midfield and Suraya out wide on the right. Branners, on crutches for a sprained ankle, informed the team that he will be out for another 5 weeks, 6 days,  22 hrs and 43 mins exactly, its great how the NHS are so accurate with their diagnosis these days!

The game started with the ball hanging in the air or flying into the hills left back area which kept Mattie and Gylo busy. The first attempt on target came for the oppo but Carts was equal to a decent strike from the number 8. After 25 mins the Hill won a free kick out on the right which was swung in for Mattie to head home from (he said 8 yards) we say 6 at most! 1-0

As per usual the next 10 mins were spent doing our best to give back an equalizer! Some sharp passing led to a low ball across our box which Gylo did excellently to get the slightest of touches on, enough to help persuade the oppo’s striker to smash the ball over form 8 yards out!

Carter and the home defence’s main problem in the second half was stopping the orange netting flying back into our penalty area! The back four were solid and an excellent shape throughout the team was key to limiting Weirside to playing hopeful long balls. With Davo doing a Stirling job in the
Makélélé role Weirside had very few chances to get back into the game.

On the offensive Hill were making some good chances with Aby terrorising the Weirside captain (he was lucky to finish the game on the pitch though spent most of it on his behind!) A little more care and cuteness would have surely led to a hatful of goals. So it was left to Barrel to fall over in the box, step and scuff another penalty home! 2-0 game over.

A special mention to Dan Putt the best looking RIGHT BACK in the SAL! who was struggling all game to keep his well groomed Barnet under control! Feeling slightly left out he tried a double roll back whilst pirouetting all alone down in the right hand corner!  Very sad! But amusing all 21 of the other players on the pitch!

Solid performance, clean sheet, plenty of creativity going forward, same required next week

Saturday 26 September

A hot sunny day, an extremely long pitch (even Davo agreed), and lovely women watching wearing very little clothing, it must be SAL football in September!!

Away to Old Salesians has become a difficult fixture over the last few years thankfully the Hill were back to full strength with Davo and his day-glow yellow boots and Didi Brannigan and his new Danger Mouse t-shirt taking their places in midfield.

To say the opposition started with a flurry would be a tad of an understatement.  They were like men possessed harrying, tackling and pressing like their lives depended on it.  After 10 mins with Davo already blowing like Thorpey after the ‘fanny’ and Branners complaining that his ankle had snapped (what do you expect when you’ve got pipe-cleaners for legs) the Hill eventually got a foothold in the game and started to command a bit of possession.  For the next 15 minutes the game was relatively even with the odd ‘mine, yours, leave-it’ episode between Gylo and Hacks being combined with Hill attacks.  And then the Hill scored.  A decent move (can’t really remember much about it) resulted in Rod receiving the ball with his back to goal in a flash he had the centre half on his backside and with aplomb he drilled the ball into the corner of the net for 1-0.  10 minutes later it was 2-0, from a corner!! Can you believe it, from a corner?  Straight off the training ground (the side of the pitch to be more exact).  Gylo, with a shout from Carter of ‘what are you doing going up for a corner’ ringing in his ear, headed the ball goal ward and Broady standing right in front of the keeper pulled a funny face to put the keeper off and then flicked the ball over the obviously shocked and by now prostrate custodian into the net.

2-0 at half time quickly became 3-0 after 10 mins of the second half as again Rod, having a great game, coolly and expertly (like an old west gunslinger) took aim and fired the ball into the net.  Salesians pulled one back soon after.  A ball that should have been cleared was returned into the box and the striker headed the ball into the net with Carter entangled in the net all dolphin-like.  Heart rates began to rise amongst the Hill and not just because of the considerable work-rate that had been put in.  Stress levels reduced again when a bit of mazy magic from Aby resulted in him being upended for a stone-wall, no complaints penalty.  Up stepped Barrell cool as you like to scuff it straight down the middle and off the keeper’s leg.  We love a penalty we really do!!  Barrell was immediately hauled off by the gaffer (quite right too!!)  Stress levels went up again when the oppo pulled another goal back through a worldy finish by the right midfielder.  3-2 with 10 minutes to play plus 70 minutes added time according to the ref.  Mark Hughes eat your heart out!!  When the game eventually finished luckily before any car headlights had to be turned on the Hill had withstood the stirring fight-back and missed a couple of good chances to make it 4 and 5.  All in all a good day, this is a tough place to come and the oppo are a decent side.

Notable mentions go to the gaffer for calling the corner routine; Rod Beya for a legend performance (every week please); Branners for playing 85 mins with an ankle that looked like a knick-knack; and, Putty for getting to grips with his right back role despite increasingly frizzy hair.

Rumour has it we’re home next week does anybody have the directions.  Onwards and upwards.

Broomfield 3 Winchmore Hill 1
Southern Amateur League
Senior Section Division One
Saturday 19 September

After a fine performance and victory against Wilsonians the Hill lost to a determined and well organised Broomfield side in a tight game in where Hill failed to take their chances.  Hill made 3 changes to the side.  Carter coming back in-between the sticks after Barcelona couldn’t meet his demands for tape and strapping, Surya replaced Davo who was still cleaning his new boots, and Thorpey made his debut in place of Branners ‘Mascherano’ who had a private one-to-one session with Reggie on how to perfect the back heel.

On another humid day the game
started scrappily with not much goal mouth action. The stalemate was broken after 20 minutes when Barrell ghosted into the box, turned his marker with a quick burst of pace and was brought down to earn a penalty.  After dusting himself off he coolly stroked the penalty home to make it 1-0.  Hill had several other chances to double there lead with Rod going closest with a header.

Broomfield’s equaliser came just before half time.  The Hill lost possession up field and Broomfield quickly counterattacked with a good move that ended with the striker 9 who played very well) expertly dispatching a one on one situation with Carts.   In the closing minutes of the half Broomfield could have been ahead with Carts making a good save and also hitting the post.

The second half Hill started well with Matty making a great run down the wing and cut it back but Barrell lofted over from 3 yards.  Broomfield made them pay for this miss with a ten minute spell which saw them fire in two fine finishes to make it 3-1.  As legs began to tire the game opened up and Hill missed several more chances with Broomfield’s keeper making a couple of decent saves.

Overall a tight game with not much between the two sides other than the finishing with Broomfield taking their chances and Hill failing to convert theirs.  On a positive it is still early days and with players to come back Hill have the long tough trip to Salesians to try and get back to winning ways.

Old Wilsonians 1 Winchmore Hill 3

Saturday 12 September

Gaffer gets his birthday present as Hill get off to good start
Winchmore Hill began their 09/10 SAL league campaign in impressive style, registering a 3-1 win in Hayes against a surprisingly sub-standard Old Wilsonians.  Encounters between the teams have always been tightly fought with very little separating the two in the last three years, however, on this occasion Winchmore were far superior and registered their first ever victory at their hosts’ ground.

A new season, and Winchmore had a slightly new-look team, having supposedly lost Paul Strouts to retirement (watch this space) and Neil Hurst seemingly having given in to a series of knee injuries, and Godfrey Poku playing in the Conference South for St Albans (good luck to him).  Andrew Carter, whilst far from retirement, was unavailable, looking instead for one last big money move to Barcelona in the twilight of his career.

In came Andy Griffiths in goal behind a rebuilt back four with Joe Hackworthy slotting alongside Pete Gyles and Dan Putt finding a new role at right back – a position that doesn’t really fit his image…that hair will have to go. The attacking six had a more familiar feel of Seymour, Davison, Barrell, Broad and Beya; the only exception being Martin Mascherano (Brannigan) finding himself further forward, and running a lot more, than he is used to, but still winning a silly amount of headers with his go-go gadget neck.

On a very hot day, the game started scrappily for 20 minutes with neither team wanting to concede an advantage on the opening day, whilst also blowing a few early-season cobwebs away.  Half chances fell to Putt and Barrell, with the hosts’ long throws causing slight problems.  However, Wilsonians – a team who usually play football, opted instead for a more direct approach, one which proved fruitless with the trio of Brannigan, Hackworthy and Gyles cleaning up anything that came near them.

The half wore on and the Hill settled into a good rhythm, moving the ball quickly with fluent interchanges between the midfield and Beya, the full backs providing able support and Brannigan getting over his early excitement of being in the engine room, realising he was in fact the holding man.  This led to the first clear cut opportunity for Beya, through one-on-one, but delaying too long, this was squandered.  Hill continued to press and take control of the game and eventually a free-kick on the right saw quarterback Davison sling a ball to the far post for Knights to compete before the ball broke to Barrell to slot home.  A deserved 1-0 lead at half-time but one which, in reality, should have been larger.

The message at half-time was clear – Winchmore were fitter and stronger than their hosts and only complacency would let them back in.  With an ageing Wilsonians team clearly suffering in the heat, Winchmore continued to press their advantage, fashioning a number of chances, all squandered, before a neat move down the left between Beya, Seymour and Knights led to a superb shanked air-shot from Broad that fell to Davison.  Thankfully he moved the ball onto his left and calmly slotted it past the keeper.  Davo already has half his total goals from last season, leading to expectations of a lot more to come.  Must be the new boots.

Hill could now stoke the ball round with more confidence and continued to create chances, which is promising, a bit of shooting practice might help though.  Another tidy left side move saw the ball fall at Beya’s feet 15 yards out who opened his body up and curled it into the top corner.  3-0 and game effectively won.

There was still time for Wilsonians to notch a well fashioned consolation, Winchmore to miss MORE chances and each of the back four to take turns in losing concentration; the pick being Gylo’s air-shot – a good yard from the ball and still searching for his hamstring.

All-in-all this was an excellent start to the season with Winchmore deserved winners.  A bit of rustiness to get out of their systems still but the performance was encouraging and gave the gaffer the birthday present he was looking for.

One down, nineteen to go.  Onwards and upwards.
