12 September  LOASS 10 Winchmore Hill A very good game to watch from the outside with two teams attempting to play football.  LOASS are a good team with naturally gifted players in every area and finished runners up in last seasons Super Premier Division. I believe this is the best I'd seen my boys play with us being unlucky in the first game and winning the second convincingly. CUP
Our first cup game of the season and with only eleven players available we knew we were in for a tough morning!  Our opponents were Broomfield Percival who play in a division above us and who, on our previous encounters over the years we have never beaten, but this was all about to change.

The boys came out with a completely different attitude to recent weeks and it was a whole team effort from the first kick of the ball.  We were 1-0 up after five minutes, a fine lob over the keeper by Sam Phillips and from then until half-time the game see-sawed with the half-time score being 2-2, our second goal coming from Sean Kelly.

The second half saw Broomfield Percival come out with all guns blazing, but for once Winchmore Hill were very much ‘game on’.  A short lapse of concentration and we were down by 2-3, but with continuous attacking play and every one taking part, the game was leveled to 3-3 by Dennis Parkes with a long shot, again over the head of the Broomfield keeper.  The boys could now see the winning post in their sight and the spirit of determination was something to behold.  With 5 minutes on the clock, a cross from Dennis Parkes to Tom King who glanced it on to Sam Phillips who finished it off to put us back in the lead.  A very long five minutes later with the defence being almost constantly under attack and the final whistle blew.

This game wasn’t just about the goal scorers, although obviously without them we wouldn’t have won, this was a game won by all eleven boys each one of them played a very important part.

Under 16 - Eastern Football Alliance (Bedford Division)
13 September Hitchin Town 3 Winchmore Hill 6

An excellent start to the Under 16s first season in the Eastern Junior Alliance against a Hitchin Town side boasting a large number of County players and playing with home advantage on third generation astroturf at the impressive Arena Stadium.

The Hill team resisted some early Hitchin pressure and 2 goals in quick succession from Winchmore’s Rhys Hunt and Conor Rua settled the visitors’ early nerves.

Hitchin struck back before Hill’s Rhys Hunt added to his earlier strike to give his side a 3-1 advantage just on the stroke of half time.

The expected second half onslaught from a stunned Hitchin side didn’t materialise and Winchmore extended their lead with further goals from another great Conor Rua strike and from substitute Oltian Klosi.

Midway through the second half, and with Winchmore in total control, Hitchin were awarded two disputed penalties in just two mad minutes. Both penalties were converted leading to a period of sustained Hitchin pressure with the score at 5-3.

Oltian Klosi then settled Winchmore nerves with a fantastic long range lob to secure Winchmore’s opening League win by 6-3.

20 September Winchmore Hill 3 AFC Kempston 1

Another long away trip, this time to North Bedfordshire, saw Winchmore’s Under 16s maintain their 100% start to the season.

Kempston started the stronger and quicker of the two sides and they deservedly took a fifth minute lead with a long range drive. Winchmore worked hard to get back in to the game and, getting in to the flow of the game, Hill took advantage of their excellent possession when skipper Scott Hayes scored a deserved equaliser mid-way through the first half.

Matthew McCarthy then burst through the middle of the sleepy Kempston back four before chipping the advancing keeper to give Hill an excellent 2-1 half time advantage after the poor start.

The second half saw a much more comfortable Winchmore sustain some early Kempston pressure before taking complete control of the match when Rhys Hunt settled the game with his second 30 yard drive of the season.

It’s very early days but to secure a League leading position with maximum points from two away games represents a great start for the Under 16s in their new environment.

27 September  Winchmore Hill 3 Ilford

(Ilford won 4-2 on penalties)
3 The Under 16s crashed out of the Eastern Junior Alliance Challenge Cup in dramatic fashion at The Frederick Knight Sports Ground in Tottenham.

A disastrous first half, in which Winchmore were comprehensively outplayed, saw the home team concede two goals in quick succession. A partial recovery in the team’s performance prevented further damage before half time and gave Hill a reasonable chance in the second half.

The fightback began on the hour when Rhys Hunt headed in from close range. A further period of pressure finally saw Hill substitute Oltian Klosi net from close range with what was effectively the final kick of normal time.

Winchmore maintained their second half dominance in extra time and were rewarded when Klosi scored his fourth goal of the season with another long range lob over the advancing Ilford keeper for Winchmore go 3-2 up. With just over a minute of extra time left on the clock, Hill’s centre back Pacome Fofe handled in the area. Ilford gratefully converted the spot kick to force a penalty shoot out.

Conversions by Hunt and Hayes, were outweighed by misses from McCarthy and the unfortunate Fofe. Ilford secured victory by 4-2 on penalties. A great game for the neutrals.

04 October Stevenage Borough 1 Winchmore Hill 3
The Under 16s maintained their 100% start to the League season with a third consecutive away League win at Stevenage Borough.

With a fully fit squad to choose from for the first time this season, Winchmore started the stronger of the two sides and controlled the early part of the game with some neat passing. Stevenage then hit the bar against the run of play and Winchmore, sensing their advantage may be slipping, stepped up a gear.

Hill mounted consecutive attacks before a long throw was headed home by skipper Scott Hayes. Clearly rocked, Stevenage found themselves exposed again when their attack broke down on the edge of Hill's box and the boys in purple launched a fast counter. Picking up the loose ball, Hayes forced his way through the middle of the park before releasing Connor Bolton who, taking the ball in his stride, drove the ball home from fully 25 yards to send Hill in 2-0 up at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Winchmore seeing a lot of the ball although, as expected, Stevenage pushed harder, eventually reverting to playing just 3 players at the back in an effort to get back into the game. Hayes then took advantage of a fantastic Ollie Blake corner to head home for Hill's third goal of the afternoon.

With the game as good as over, a freak bounce deceived Winchmore's keeper Andrew Layton and the Stevenage striker slotted home the gift for a late consolation. Hayes rounded off a man of the match performance by hitting a post and scooping an even easier chance over the bar from 4 yards out!

Three very good points for Hill. Next week, the Under 16s entertain Hemel Hempstead in their first home League game of the season at The Paulin.

11 October Winchmore Hill 2 Hemel Hempstead 3
The Under 16s only had themselves to blame after they suffered their first League defeat of the season going down 2-3 to a determined and well-drilled Hemel Hempstead side in the Eastern Junior Alliance Bedford section's top of the table clash at The Paulin.

A poor team performance from Hill on the back of 3 straight League wins was the least expected outcome, particularly after Hill's leading scorer Oltian Klosi missed a very early chance to put Winchmore ahead when his free header went well wide of the post.

Hemel gained strength from this let off and went on to dominate the first half playing neat, direct attacking football and pressing the ball very well. Another quick Hemel break caught Ciaran Grant and Pacome Fofe asleep at the heart of Hill's defence and the Hemel striker helped himself to the easiest of chances to send in Hill 1-0 down at the break.

An early Winchmore raid immediately after half time saw Hemel's defender deflect a Hill shot in to his own net and at 1-1 Winchmore then played their best football of the game for an all-too-short 20 minute spell. The second deflected goal of the half meant all Hill's hard work to get back at Hemel was undone in a moment. At 1-2 up, Hemel again looked the better side before Rhys Hunt scrambled in Hill's second equaliser after a well struck corner and a fumble from the Hemel keeper.

The game looked to be heading for a 2-2 draw when, for the third time - and with just four minutes left on the clock - poor Winchmore defending allowed the Hemel man time and space to pick his spot and drill the winner home from 12 yards. A day to forget for Winchmore Hill, but well played to Hemel Hempstead who deserved their victory.

18 October Winchmore Hill 2 Borehamwood 3
Another last minute goal consigned Hill's Under 16s to their second successive home defeat of the season. After last week's disappointing defeat at the hands of Hemel Hempstead, the 16s needed a good result to maintain their excellent start to the season and to hold on to top spot in the Eastern Junior Alliance's Bedford Section.

Conceding early on to a good Boreham Wood side wasn't the ideal start. However, Hill struck back quickly when a good move ended with Matthew McCarthy driving the ball in to the far corner. Hill played some neat football for the remainder of the first half with debutant Louie Dixon playing well in the middle of the park but the best chances still fell to Boreham Wood.

The second half was a reversal with Hill starting the brighter and going ahead early on when midfielder Don Briedas' sweetly struck shot from the edge of the box found the corner of the goal. Hill continued to played neat football without really ever creating chances or troubling the Boreham Wood goalkeeper.

Gradually, Boreham Wood saw more of the ball and put HIll under increasing pressure with Andrew Layton ion Hill's goal making some excellent saves at crucial times. The equaliser came shortly after Boreham Wood had seen a goal disallowed for offside. Even at 2-2, Winchmore's Connor Bolton created a great opportunity to seal all three points but his shot went narrowly wide.

Once again, the match looked to be heading for a draw - probably a fairer result - when a flurry of Boreham Wood corners led to another goalmouth scramble and the ball being prodded home from six yards out three minutes in to added time. A better performance but more disappointment - and yet more learning.

01 November  Stotfold 2 Winchmore Hill 3
The Under 16s travelled to the small Bedfordshire town of Stotfold looking to end a run of two successive league defeats. Stotfold's stadium pitch withstood the torrential rain in the hours leading up to kick-off and for the whole game incredibly well, but going a goal down after just 15 seconds wasn't part of Winchmore's plan.

Yet another poor first half performance followed the nightmare start and saw Hill 0-2 at HT and in desperate need of changes. Five 2nd half substitutes saw a much improved fighting performance in increasingly windswept and wet conditions.

Matthew McCarthy's introduction at the break proved decisive as, after a period of good pressure, he broke through a stubborn Stotfold defence to put Winchmore back in the game 1-2. The game started to change and Hill's relentless pressure saw several more near misses before stand-in skipper Ashley Smart slotted home after a defensive clearance from a corner fell nicely for him.

At 2-2, there looked to be only one winner with Winchmore tormenting Stotfold with attack after attack. The final change of the game occurred when Oltian Klosi, Hill's super-sub, came on with ten minutes to go and, with just a two minutes left on the clock, the striker burst through the middle before forcing the ball past a despairing Stotfold keeper and centre back for his 5th goal of the season - all from the bench.

The Under 16s have now scored 22 goals in 7 EJA league and cup games and have been involved in some thrilling matches already this season. Credit to both teams today for playing the game in an excellent spirit despite the terrible weather conditions - and well done to the boys for a fantastic fight back and an excellent away win. That's 4 away wins out of 4.

08 November  Winchmore Hill 2 Brentford 1
The first of two successive week-ends without Eastern Junior Alliance League or Cup matches saw the Under 16s entertain Brentford in a close and keenly fought friendly match at The Paulin Ground played in a great spirit.

A tight and technical first half in which both sides played some excellent football and Brentford created the better of the chances ended 0-0 after Hill had lost debutant reserve goalkeeper Andrew Donohue with a suspected broken hand after just ten minutes. First choice keeper Andrew Layton replaced him and was himself hurt making a very brave save at the feet of Brentford's striker before recovering to play another very solid game.

The second half saw the game open up a little more with Winchmore Hill seeing a lot of the ball and creating the better chances. After going close from successive corners and then hitting the bar, Hill's defence were caught square from a quick break away and Brentford went ahead against the run of the play.

In one of their best performances of the season, Winchmore then stepped up to the challenge posed by the West Londoners and were rewarded when debutant striker Morotti Odebunmi side-footed home a cross-shot from Connor Bolton and finished an excellent move from the right side.

Winchmore continued to look the more dangerous of the two sides and took advantage of yet more possession when, for the sixth time this season, super-substitute and Under 16s top scorer Oltian Klosi netted from 8 yards after he received the ball from Matthew McCarthy's superb jinking run down the right flank with just 3 minutes left.

Next week, Winchmore Hill's U16s host Tottenham Hotspur U16s, coached by former Brighton star and FA Cup Finalist, Chris Ramsey.
The visit of a Premiership Academy side will be a very big test for the boys and a fantastic learning experience. This friendly match takes place at The Paulin Ground on Sunday 15 November 2009, Kick-Off 1pm. All welcome.

15 November  Winchmore Hill 3 Tottenham Hotspur 0
An excellent performance from the U16s today to convincingly beat an Academy team from Tottenham Hotspur made up of U16s, U15s, and trialists on an excellent 1st team pitch at The Paulin. The game was played over three 30 minute periods and Hill's boys did exceptionally well to win each of them by a goal to nil. Both sides took advantage of the format to field large squads over the 90 minute match refereed by David Lodge.

The first third of the game was predictably tight with Tottenham settling faster and creating the better of the early chances. Good keeping from man of the match Andrew Layton ensured Hill saw off the early Spurs onslaught. Hill eased the pressure on themselves by starting to play their football. Some neat passing and good movement from Hill's midfielders led to an opening for former Tottenham Academy player Liam Roche who scored for the first time since returning to The Paulin. 1-0 Hill.

The second third saw Hill start the stronger after several changes to their starting line-up. Tottenham again created one or two good chances which were well saved by Layton before starting to look the more threatening and stronger of the two sides. Hill again used their substitutes well to strengthen at a critical time in the game and scored a second when another former Spurs Academy player, Matthew McCarthy, finished off a nice move to put Hill in to a commanding 2-0 lead at the end of 60 minutes.

Winchmore's lads re-grouped for the final third of the game and, after withstanding some early pressure from a Tottenham side determined to make their mark at The Paulin, Hill set out to close out the game. Andrew Layton looked determined to keep his first clean sheet of the season and, with both sides tiring, Rhys Hunt scored another of his superb long range efforts to ensure the U16s maintained their excellent record against professional clubs and wrap up the 3-0 victory.

Many thanks to Tottenham's coaching staff led by former Brighton star and FA Cup finalist, Chris Ramsey, his assistant, Bradley Allen, and Tottenham's Academy Director, John McDermott, for bringing their lads across to The Paulin. Both sides were also very well supported by around 200 spectators on a bright and breezy afternoon in North London. Well played to both teams and congratulations to the U16s who now face Ilford in the AFA County Cup next week-end followed by the midweek challenge of facing Leyton Orient FC's U16s in another friendly match at Brisbane Road.

23 November Leyton Orient 4 Winchmore Hill 2
On a cold blustery night at Brisbane Road, the Under 16s took on a tough, well organised and quick O's U16s squad in the third of a series of matches against Academy opposition. After beating Spurs and Brentford at home, the 16s had every reason to be confident going in to the game despite the absence of 6 regular starters.

Winchmore started well and it was in-form Matthew McCarthy who put the visitors ahead after just a few minutes. Shortly after, the young Winchmore striker had another opportunity to put Winchmore into a commanding 2-0 lead but opted to round the keeper rather than take the early strike and was thwarted.

Unfortunately, this let off inspired the O's and they started to take control of the game with quick passing and great movement. Winchmore's boys were soon on the back foot and a failure to track runners saw them concede three goals before the end of an entertaining first half.

The second half continued in a similar vein with Leyton Orient the far better side and, with their options for change limited due to the high number of absences, Winchmore fell further behind. At 4-1 down, Hill settled a little and started to try and play some football and this led to trialist Morotti Odebunmi netting a consolation for the visitors.

A 4-2 defeat away from home at a strong Academy team with a depleted squad was far from an embarrassment but Hill's lads will have learned a lot from Orient's quick passing and movement off the ball and their excellent ball retention. A good work out to complete the U16s exposure to some of London's Academy teams. This Sunday, the U16s take on Ilford in the AFA Cup.

17 January  Lea Valley United 0 Winchmore Hill 12 AFA Cup Quarter Final
After 8 long weeks without kicking a ball, the Under 16s finally got their New Year off with a bang on January 17 by playing their twice postponed AFA Cup quarter final fixture against Cheshunt League side Lea Valley United.

80 long minutes and 12 goals later without reply, Lea Valley might have wished the game had been postponed for a third time as Winchmore ran riot and confirmed the gap that now exists between the Cheshunt League and the Easter Junior Alliance.

Incredibly, the game was level until around half way through the first half when Hill's sweeper, Ashley Smart broke the deadlock. Two minutes later and Smart added a second and the 16s, hungry for football and even hungrier for goals, were on their way to a resounding victory.

Midfielders Rhys Hunt and Liam Roche and striker Matthew McCarthy added to Hill's first half tally and took the half time score to a very comfortable 5-0 as Lea Valley started to crumble.

The second half saw Hill make 5 changes to the starting line up. If the visitors thought this would help their cause, they couldn't have been more wrong as Hill added 7 second half goals to set up a semi final clash with Essex-based Cheshunt League side Theydon FC.

Inevitably, Hill's top scorer Oltian Klosi added to his incredible record for the season, Roche and McCarthy both scored again, while Hunt notched a second half hat trick to take his haul from the game to 4 goals and Luis Emmanuel capped an effective substitute's performance with an excellent first competitive goal for the Club.

After the enforced "winter break", the 16s have started 2010 in great style and now face an AFA Cup semi final before a three-times postponed EJA Cup tie and a much sterner test against Stevenage Borough eager to avenge an earlier League defeat at the hands of Hill.

24 January  Winchmore Hill 6 Theydon Bois 0
AFA Cup Semi Final
The Under 16s took their 2010 goal tally to an impressive 18 in just 2 games and kept another clean sheet as they progressed to another Cup Final with a 6-0 win against Theydon FC in today's AFA cup semi final at The Paulin.

A very tight first half saw a well-organised Theydon start the better of the two sides. The Cheshunt Premier League side who had won 7 and drawn 2 of their 9 league and cup games prior to this match were clearly brimming with confidence as they enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and showed great desire to maintain their unbeaten record in all competitions this season.

Theydon's quick front two caused some early problems for the home defence and, as Winchmore struggled to shake off the rust of playing just 1 game in 8 weeks, the visitors could have found themselves one or even two goals to the good.

However, as the first half drew to a close, Winchmore started to show something of their 2009 Eastern Junior Alliance form and looked relieved when hard working central midfielder Pacombe Fofe took advantage of a brilliantly taken free kick from Connor Bolton to steer the ball in to Theydon's net from just six yards out and give Hill a 1-0 HT lead.

Winchmore started the 2nd half with much more purpose and looked the sharper of the teams in the first few minutes. Winchmore created more space and moved the ball faster in the opening minutes of this half than in the previous 40 minutes put together and immediately put Theydon under serious pressure.

Some neat exchanges in midfield saw Theydon retreating fast before the ball found its way to Matthew McCarthy on the left and, thinking they were safer, Theydon's defenders steered McCarthy on to his weaker left foot only for the young striker to unleash a 20 yard drive that flew past the keeper's outstretched hand in to the top left hand corner.

At 2-0 up, and with their passing and moving game beginning to flow, Hill relaxed and started to enjoy the occasion despite Theydon's physical approach to the match and their persistent fouling (which eventually saw the visitors picking up two yellow cards - it could have been more - as the excellent referee lost patience with Theydon's tactics).

A series of substitutions then freshened Winchmore's attack and midfield. Top scorer Oltian Klosi replaced McCarthy up top and Conor Rua replaced a tiring Liam Roche, who had enjoyed another good midfield game back in Hill's colours. Rua took very little time to make his mark playing an excellent pass through to the impressive Connor Bolton who slotted home from 12 yards. 3-0 Hill.

Now very comfortable at the back, where left back Sam Barber enjoyed one of his best games of the season, and dominating the centre of midfield, with Don Briedas also in great form, Hill piled on the pressure quickly adding to their lead through top scorer Klosi whose left shot eluded Theydon's keeper.

At 4-0, Winchmore felt comfortable enough to give Andrew Donohoe, their reserve keeper who has impressed in training, a run out to make his competitive debut. Donohoe looked calm and assured in his 20 minutes on the pitch and ensured Hill's second successive clean sheet of the new year with a good collection under pressure from two Theydon strikers.

The prolific Klosi then cemented Hill's second half dominance by adding a right foot side foot and a header to complete his second half hat trick leaving Winchmore 6-0 winners and looking forward to another AFA Cup Final. If the other side of the draw pans out as expected, Hill may well face old foes and fellow Eastern Junior Alliance challengers, Ilford FC.

7 February  Winchmore Hill 1 Stevenage Borough 2
The Under 16s crashed out of the Eastern Junior Alliance Chairman's Cup with a 2-1 defeat at home to Stevenage Borough

The EJA Bedford Section rivals went in to battle at The Paulin for the first time this season with Stevenage looking to avenge a 3-1 home League defeat to Hill earlier in the season.

Despite losing their captain Ashley Smart to illness just before kick-off, Hill started well and were far the better of the two sides on a heavy pitch. Winchmore's Fofe and Dixon commanded the middle of the park and a clearly frustrated Boro gave away a succession of free kicks as they struggled to compete in all areas - apart from in the middle of their defence where the centre back enjoyed an excellent match.

As the first half drifted by, Hill, while moving the ball well, maintaining good possession and playing some useful balls in to the box, failed to create any real chances or to make their dominance count. And Boro, who had moved away from their usual 4-3-3 to match Hill's 4-5-1, looked relieved to go in at the break 0-0.

The second half saw Hill once again start the better of the two sides. With Boro back in a more familiar 4-3-3, the midfield opened up a little and Hill started to create more in and around the edge of the Stevenage box which, inevitably, led to a succession of fouls from the visitors.

With the game threatening to boil over, the referee wisely decided to use his yellow card to calm things down and, when Hill secured yet another free kick 25 yards from goal, it was McCarthy who stepped up to deliver the perfect drive in to the top right hand corner of the Boro goal. 1-0.

Well on top and a goal to the good, Hill looked the more likely side to go on to win the game. However, with Hill's midfield tiring, Stevenage saw their opportunity. A missed header and failed clearance later and the scores were level. A quick Boro break and a great cross from the right and Hill suddenly found themselves 2-1 down.

WIth ten minutes to go, Hill took to playing a 3-4-3 and piled on the pressure. Several consecutive corners and a number of half chances later, Hill's Blake, back in the side for the first time in two months, found himself one on one with the keeper just 6 yards out. Unfortunately, Blake failed to get the ball from under his feet and a relieved Boro keeper was able to smother it.

There was still time for two more corners with Boro's keeper tipping over from stand-in skipper Briedas' close range header. - A couple of long range efforts later and the final whistle ended the Under 16s participation in the EJA's premier Cup competition - a good opportunity to progress missed.

21 February  Winchmore Hill  4 Kings Langley
On a rain-soaked centre pitch at The Paulin, the Under 16s played host to a competitive Kings Langley in the Eastern Junior Alliance Bedford Section.

Hill's 16s, eager to put behind them their first consecutive defeats for more than two years and improve on a dreadful home record in the League, once again started strongly and looked the more composed of the two sides in very difficult conditions.

However, that early confidence was shattered when keeper Andrew Donohoe mis-cued a free kick taken from outside his own penalty area then saved the long range shot only to be let down by his defenders who reacted too slowly to the parry. 0-1.

The Winchmore boys then settled in to another controlled period of play enjoying plenty of the ball without really threatening Kings Langley's goal. Then, for the second time in the half, two consecutive Hill errors led to an easy far post header and a second goal for the visitors. 0-2.

With the rain continuing to lash down, Hill's day then got a whole lot worse. Yet again, a series of defensive lapses saw Langley's centre forward burst through the static centre of the purple defence and slot home to make the score 0-3 to the ecstatic visitors. Game over?

To Winchmore's credit, the boys continued to play the better football and enjoy more possession than the visitors. Eventually, with just a few minutes of the 1st half remaining, Rhys Hunt, who enjoyed an excellent game, slotted home coolly to send Hill in with hope at the break. 1-3.

The second half started as the first had finished with Hill dominating possession and, despite the conditions, playing some of their most attractive football of the season.

The introduction of lively substitutes Matthew McCarthy and Luis Emmanuel started to cause the visitors all kinds of problems and within a few minutes of the re-start a scramble from a corner saw centre back Ciaran Grant slot home. 2-3. Game very much on.

Kings Langley, shocked at the ferocity of the second half start from their hosts, retreated deeper and deeper and looked increasingly concerned at Emmanuel's pace and McCarthy's twisting and turning runs, but it took a cool finish from the busy and highly effective Connor Bolton, chipping the keeper, to level the scores at 3-3.

At this point, with Langley reeling from the onslaught there was only likely to be one winner and it was no surprise when Emmanuel completed a fine performance by firing home the winner with 15 minutes to go to give Hill all three points and a famous 4-3 win at The Paulin. Substitute Klosi came close to adding to his season's tally only to see Langley's keeper tip over from Klosi's rasping drive.

Impressive performances from Liam Roche and Don Briedas in midfield and skipper for the day, Sam Barber, and Ciaran Grant at the back gave Hill a fine foundation from which to launch the comeback of the season and take the under 16s back in to the EJA's Bedford Section top 3
