  From the touchline:

A FALL AT THE FINAL FENCE...

As predicted last week, it was going to go the distance and unfortunately Winchmore Hill fell at the final fence.

Matches against Broomfield are always tight affairs. It makes Broomfield's season to beat the Hill and in recent years they have had the rub of the green.

Things certainly went in their favour last Saturday, the final weekend of the season where a win for Winchmore Hill would almost certainly reward them with their first league championship since 1984.

Played at Haringey Borough's White Hart Lane ground the match was evenly poised, both sides playing decent football on a dry hard dusty pitch. Both teams had difficulty in getting the ball on the ground and the large playing area offered lots of space.

The Hill had a few early chances and were looking comfortable until the turning point of the match just before the interval. The ball went into a crowded Hill penalty area and struck a raised hand. Referee Len Wilcock immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Despite strong protests from the Hill defenders that it was a Broomfield hand that touched the ball, Mr. Wilcock was not moved, nor did he consult with his assistant referee. The penalty was converted to give Broomfield a 1 - 0 half time lead.

Twenty five minutes into the second half Broomfield doubled their advantage with a well taken goal. The Broomfield winger turned Pete Gyles and made off down the line with Gyles in pursuit, grabbing a handful of shirt. Alfter Gyles let go, the cross came in and the ball was headed past Andrew Carter for 2 - 0. Gyles later felt he should have hung on and taken the card!

With fifteen minutes left the Hill pulled one back when Rod Beya's left footed drive found the corner of the net. From this moment on it was virtually all Winchmore Hill but Broomfield stood firm with Mark Robbins, their keeper, making some fortunate saves with his feet and other goalbound attempts striking Broomfield defenders.

With five minutes left news that Old Salesians had lost 2 - 0 at West Wickham was received and more pressure was put on Broomfield's back line. They held out.

We later learned that Nottsborough had beaten Old Wilsonians
1 - 0 which left all three contending Clubs level on 38 points. Nottsborough's two valuable midweek victories against a weakened Old Actonians (6-0 and 6-0) gave them a superior goal defference and the Championship remains with the holders.

Despite the disappointment, the Hill can be proud of their achievements this season. To win the AFA Senior Cup and to challenge for the title throughout the campaign was a fine effort.  Let's hope to go one better next season.
