BARRELL PUTS HILL IN FINAL
Winchmore Hill 1 Old Owens 0
AFA Senior Cup - Semi Final (at Old Parkonians F.C.)
Saturday 6 March

An extra time header from Andy Barrell, following good work down the left flank beginning with Mattie Knights and ending in Aby Seymour's cross, set up a mouth-watering final against Nottsborough on 10th April.

The game began with Owens flexing their muscles as they charged into the Hill, seeking to upset the rhythm. The Hill kept their nerve, shape and their attitude, despite some hard challenges that led to a series of free kicks for the Hill and an early yellow card for Old Owens.

Once the early exchanges calmed the Hill took control of the midfield with Martin Brannigan dominating the central area. With the pace of the wide men, Hugo De Jesus and Aby Seymour the Hill pressed forward and created chances. The best chance came on the half-hour when De Jesus burst through and was brought down inside the area. Up stepped top goalscorer, Andy Barrell to take the kick, but his weak effort was comfortably saved by the Owens keeper, guessing correctly, diving to his left.

More chances came with all the pressure on the defenders of Old Owens, but nothing was converted and the teams went in at the interval with no goals to show.

With the wind now behind them, Owens pressed forward and Andrew Carter made a good save from a shot from close range. The inswinging crosses were dealt with capably and the Hill began to take control.

Knights was having an excellent game, winning the majority of his challenges and distributing the ball well through the midfield. Rod Beya was also having a fine game, holding the ball well and putting telling through balls to the wide men on the wings.

Still nothing to separated the teams coming towards the end of the ninety minutes. Ben Head replaced Stuart Broad who had played well and the final ten minutes was all Winchmore Hill. Owens keeper was forced to make several telling saves to keep his side in the match. Winchmore Hill hit the post from an Andy Barrell free kick and in the dying seconds of the game it was hard to fathom why the ball didn't cross the line from Barrell's effort. Beya just couldn't get a touch and it was cleared to safety.

The Hill had a scare early in the first period of extra time when the ball struck the top of their crossbar, bouncing back into play; but there was my 'Man of the Match', Mattie Knights, to clear the ball. Shortly after this came the Barrell goal to give the Hill a well deserved lead at the half-way stage of extra time.

The second period of extra time saw the Hill with a great deal of possession, holding the ball well and running down the clock. This clearly frustrated some of the Old Owens team, leading to a few nasty challenges, heated words and yellow cards. With two minutes remaining Owens were reduced to ten men and for the remainder of time the Hill held their discipline, held the ball and put themselves into the final of the biggest trophy in 'Pay to Play' (Amateur) football.

In the other semi final between Broomfield and Nottsborough, The Brooms swept into a 3 - 1 lead but Nottsborough pulled it back to 3 - 3 with the last kick of the match. During extra time Nottsborough lost a man to serious injury which held up play for twenty minutes pending the arrival of an ambulance. Having used all their substitutes they were forced to play the majority of extra time with ten men. Nottsborough took a 4 - 3 lead only to be pegged back to 4 - 4 but a late goal put the holders back on track in their attempt to retain the trophy.

It should be a fine game on 10th April between two sides that can play attractive football.
