WH&E U13's Middlesex Boys Hockey Tournament
Away
The U13 played 5 games in the Middlesex tournament at Eastcote but the results don't make good reading.  Starting with what was probably the least tough opposition WH&E went 1 down on the stroke of half time, and eventually lost 2-0 to Bethnal Green.  Having been assured by one of our players that we'd definitely score against Staines we lost 7-0!!  A determined first half performance against Ashford A was broken by a clever flick into the D, and a good strike to put us 1-0 down at the interval.  They were far superior in the second half and we eventually lost 4-0.  The game against Harrow saw us 3-0 down by half time, but the addition of Tom Perkins fresh from a football match saw us actually create several chances.   Unfortunately, all went narrowly wide and Harrow ended 4-0 winners.
The last game against Teddington was always going to be tricky, and so it proved.  Some super goalkeeping by Sam Sherry kept the score to single figures, as we lost 7-0 again.
Despite not scoring, the lads performed admirably against strong opposition mainly at the top of their age bracket - with several of our players actually still U11's.  Special mentions go to Sam and Joshua Dodds, who made some cracking saves when they each played in goal.

Junior hockey matches vs. St Albans HC
Sunday 4th March 2007
Away

Four friendly matches were played away at St. Albans last Sunday.
Late arrivals meant little time for a warm up, and that showed as St. Albans ran out 2-0 victors in the opening game with WH&E pressed within their own half for much of the game.
Having warmed/woken up game 2 ended in a 0-0 draw, thanks largely to some great tackling and defending by young Anish Kakaiya.
Further improvement saw WH&E win game 3, 1-0. Arianna Savore, scored the only goal and her first ever for the club - great stuff!
Buoyed by that victory and with goalkeeper Mitchell Hill now appearing out on pitch, WH&E went 2-0 up early in game 4. Jordan Amalfitano-Tait getting her first ever goal, and Arianna her/the second. Lucy Savage and Lucy Waters showed good skill, pace and awareness and made St. Albans work hard.  Despite resolute defending from Calum Grundon, Luke Sutherland and Anish, St. Albans grabbed 2 goals of their own as the final match fittingly finished 2-2.  Thank you to the parents for braving the rain and for their vocal support.

Junior hockey matches vs. Broxbourne HC
Sunday 18 Feb 2007
Southbury Leisure Centre

Broxbourne under 9's, 11's and 13's visited Southbury Corner on Sunday morning for a 7-aside friendly round robin.  WH&E U9's played two games, winning both 1-0 and 4-0 - with only 6 players!  Corrie grabbed 4 of the goals but was ably assisted by the skills and tackling of Lucy Waters and Jordan Amalfitano-Tait - great prospects for the future.
The U11's and U13's were split into two teams.  One of the U11 teams won one of their games 2-1, but the 3 other U11 matches saw Broxbourne victorious.  Broxbourne's U13 teams won 5 of the 6 matches that they played against WH&E - thanks to them for loaning us a couple of players.  Not great results but not bad since some of the U9's also played in the U11's and U13's.
The club sends a huge thank you to Gemma Burd and Jenna Saunders for the unenviable task of running the teams and to Youth Co-ordinator Graham Sparrey for arranging the games.

Under 11’s ~ Leighton Buzzard Tournament

Sunday 12 March 2006
A throw back to the days of mini hockey at Enfield, saw the WH&E U11’s venture into Bedfordshire for their latest excursion. They played four 15 minute 7-aside mixed matches.
The first game against Harpenden saw the WH&E start with 6 because of a late arrival. Despite the handicap, our youngsters took a 1-0 lead through Jack Perkins. The addition of our 7th player added more strength. Sam Sherry scored the second in the 2-0 win.
That win was followed up by another comfortable 3-1 victory against Leighton Buzzard Blacks. Great goalkeeping by Joshua Dodd’s proved crucial in the win. Tom Perkins scored one, whilst his brother Jack notched another two goals. The game also saw the debut Sam’s little brother Daniel - just 5 years old!
A change of pitch for matches 3 and 4 and thankfully not a change of luck. The third game against Vauxhall Chiltern saw a very even match. Thomas Sherry our super sub, came on and played in Tom Perkins to score the winner, whilst Jessica Turmaine made a super tackle giving WH&E a narrow 1-0 win.
Confidence was now high (perhaps too high?) yet we could only manage a 0-0 draw against Luton Red’s in the final group match. This time the star performances were by Lucy Waters and Pavan Gulrajani - their tough tackling in defence and midfield kept the oppo at bay. At the other end WH&E were unable to convert the few chances they had.
The results saw WH&E win the group and play Leighton Buzzard Gold in the final. Despite a close fought match WH&E went 1-0 down. A last gasp chance saw Sam’s shot well saved though the keeper wiped him out in the process and whilst still lying injured the final whistle went.
A great performance from all who took part, some magic hockey played, and great vocal support from the parents and coaches Gemma Burd and Jenna Saunders - Thank you!

Winchmore Hill & Enfield Under 11’s
at the
Middlesex U11 Championships
Sunday 26 February 2006

The U11's faced a stiff test being drawn in a group with Eastcote, Harrow, Staines and Teddington - well, if their senior teams are anything to go by!
They played four, 12 minute matches, and lost their first game 2-0 against Staines.  Despite the score line, WH&E had quite a bit of possession in the midfield, but that's not where the goals are scored!
The second game was against Harrow - a team the U11's had previously won and lost against.  Some great stick work and a mazy run into the D by Tom Perkins from his fullback position put WH&E 1-0.  However, the game finished 1-1, with Harrow scoring a late but perhaps deserved equaliser.
The game against Eastcote saw a reorganisation of players in different positions.  WH&E finished 1-0 winners, thanks to another goal scored by Tom from fullback.
All to play for but with the toughest match left - Teddington!  Having seen them play WH&E realised this would be a toughie.  They defended well and even came close to scoring a couple of times, but once Teddington took the lead, WH&E started chasing the ball and eventually went down 4-0.
Hope you're all looking forward to Leighton Buzzard next Sunday 12th March - that should bring back a few memories!

Winchmore Hill & Enfield Under 11’s
v Harrow Under 11's

Winchmore Hill & Enfield
Under 11’s travelled to Harrow with high expectations, having gone unbeaten in their first games against Southgate recently.  They played two twenty minute games.
The first game began with WH&E applying lost of pressure, and restricting Harrow to rare breakaways.  Sam Sherry hit a post and Brooke Taylor came close to scoring from the edge of the D, but it remained 0-0 at half time.
Half time substitutions and reorganisation of players in unfamiliar positions (blame the manager!) spoiled the good work, as WH&E conceded two goals to a revitalised Harrow, and were themselves restricted to rare breakaways.
WH&E returned to form in a nail biter of a second game and went 1-0 up courtesy of a terrier like performance from Lucy Waters in midfield, some strong forward runs from the back by Tom Perkins, and a goal from Sam Sherry.  Harrow fought back with some slick dribbling and equalised shortly after.  WH&E increased the pressure with Sam and Jack Perkins both coming close, however it was not until the final minutes that goal machine Sherry struck home from the edge of the D - he now has 5 goals in 5 outfield games.

A great all round performance and recovery in the second game – well done!

Winchmore Hill & Enfield
Under 11’s
v Southgate Under 11's

Winchmore Hill & Enfield
Under 11’s took on two teams from Southgate Hockey Club at Southbury Leisure Centre on Sunday, 29th January 2006 and, proudly, came out on top in a friendly round robin.
With so many new faces this year, few had ever played in a match before, so there was plenty of excitement and butterflies - and that was just from the coaches!
Each team played four 10 minute matches, with WH&E winning two, 4-1 and 3-0 and drawing two, 0-0.
Everyone played very well, got stuck in and proved that all the practice has been worthwhile.  Special mention must be made to goalkeepers Joshua Dodds and Sam Sherry who let in 1 goal between them and to Thomas Perkins (3), Sam Sherry (3), and Liam Moore who provided the goals.
A big thank you, too, to coaches Jenna Saunders and Lindsey Brackey who organised the team and to Ross Taylor for braving the cold (in shorts!) to umpire all the matches. Finally, thanks to all the supporters.
