What sets Winchmore Hill Tennis Club
apart more than anything else is a friendly and sociable atmosphere
where adults and children of all ages and playing standards can turn
up and play just about whenever they choose. It's a club where you
will not find the cliques and snobbishness sadly often associated
with tennis. The ethos of the club is that tennis should be played
in a relaxed, friendly environment - hence the motto 'Tennis
for All'. It doesn’t get much better than playing a set or few
on lawn courts with friends on a balmy summer evening! The sound of
leather on willow from a match on the cricket pitch, with the
prospect of a drink in the club house afterwards…. It just gets
even better
We have just completed a redevelopment project of four of our
courts. This means that in addition to our five grass courts, we now
have four brand new all weather artificial grass courts. Three of
these are floodlit and will undoubtedly be in use during evenings
throughout the year.
Coaching - and Youth Development
Any sports club's future lies with its development of its young
players and Winchmore Hill Tennis Club are firmly committed to youth
development. Our coach, Darren Plank, is particularly active in
helping to develop young players and runs several coaching courses
[especially during the holidays] as well as our Junior tennis
nights. He is also visiting the local primary schools on a regular
basis to encourage children to take up the sport. It is hoped that
we will become an accredited mini tennis club in the near future.
Darren provides coaching for individuals and groups of all ages and
standards and can be reached on 07960
071 478 or by (email)
Social Tennis and Competitions
The Club operates social tennis sessions on Wednesday evenings,
Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings, when most senior members
are able to
turn up and join in.
We have four ladies’ teams and five men’s teams entered in this
year’s summer competitions. The fifth team is made up of mainly
junior members. We also have junior sides entered in competitions in
the under 14s, under 16s and under 18s age groups.
There is a very active social side to life at Winchmore Hill. Away
from the tennis courts there are regular fundraising events such as
quiz nights and an annual dinner and dance. We had our first salsa
night this year with over one hundred dancers taking part!
The Tennis Section is run by its own Management Committee which is
elected during an Annual General Meeting. The Tennis Committee is,
in turn, responsible to the Management Committee of the Winchmore
Hill Cricket Club. In order to keep its membership aware of
developments within the club, the tennis section regularly issues a
newsletter to all members. Past editions can be viewed on the club
web site.
If you would like to find out more about
the Club, then feel free to contact Ian Cushway [membership
secretary], Sue Murphy [the tennis section Chairman] or any
other committee member
