The lawn tennis
section was formed in 1912 and it has grown to become a vibrant and
integral part of the Cricket Club. Originally the section played only
on grass courts. Those grass courts remain today and are amongst the
very best in North London. Over the years professional players including
local tennis star Jo Durie have been known to practice on them before
the Wimbledon Championships. The hardcourts did not appear until 1933.
As for success in terms of ladies' and men's team tennis, this has
seen many highs and lows over the years, as has the level of membership,
which for most of its long history rarely rose above 100 members.
Nowadays it is one of the fastest growing and successful clubs for
miles with membership exceeding 150 - and there's plenty of room for
more!
What sets the Winchmore Hill Tennis Club apart more than anything
else is the friendly and sociable atmosphere where adults and children
of all ages and playing standards can turn up and play just about
whenever they choose. It's a club where you will not find the cliques
and snobbishness sadly often associated with tennis. The very ethos
of the club is that tennis should be fun and be played in a relaxed,
friendly environment - hence the motto 'Tennis for All'.
